The walling we are recommending for this area of your project is
New softwood tanalized timber sleepers (200mm x100mm x 2.4/3m long)
Price Band:
Green Treated Tanalized Sleepers
Expected life span: 15 years (depending on the quality purchased)
Sleepers are a cost effective way to create low retaining walls
Finished colour: Sleepers look great when left ‘natural’ or can be painted for a more contemporary look (check your SmartPlan for colour). Popular colours include Cuprinol Ash Black and Urban Slate.
Installation notes:
Creation of a sleeper wall where sleepers are laid on belly as photographed.
Base Sleeper for Sleeper wall
Drill 3 No 12mm holes in the sleeper (one centrally and one 250mm in from either end)
Hammer a 250mm length of rebar through each hole
Dig a trench 150mm deep and 350-400mm wide
Lay wet concrete (check on mix)
Lay sleeper on wet concrete pushing rebar into the concrete
Concrete 100mm wooden posts at the rear every 1m for sleeper walls over 600mm high
Any area of the sleepers that come into contact with soil should be lined with 1000 grade visquine or painted with black bitumen paint suitable for timber (allow to dry prior installation/backfilling) to ensure longevity - follow manufactures advice on installation and safety precautions.
Further sleepers to be laid with staggered joints and fastened from above and at the rear with Fastenmaster 150mm TimberLok Screws.
Works well when used as:
Small retaining walls (max height 900mm), for the creation of raised plant or vegetable beds and as an edging where small changes in level are required.
Additional Useful Information:
Should not be used to create walls over 900mm
