This hardworking, smaller Astrantia is a lovely when planted at the front of a border. The deep reddish mauve ruff of bracts appear in late spring and continue into autumn. These intensely coloured pincushion flowers are loved by pollinators and make great cut flowers, combining very well with ornamental grasses and other perennials.
Aftercare: To encourage a second flush of flowers, cut down to the basal foliage after the first flowers start to fade or deadhead regularly to prevent self seeding and encourage more flowers. Mulch in spring with well rotted organic matter after cutting away any dead stems. Water well in dry spells as Astrantia's need moisture to look their best.
