Allium schoenoprasum
Description:
Chives are a hardy perennial herb which are members of the onion family and sprout narrow, cylindrical leaves from tiny underground bulbs. The foliage and flowers are both edible and add a mild oniony flavour when chopped and sprinkled onto soups or salads. They also make a tasty garnish for boiled potatoes or fish dishes. Chives are a great companion plant to carrots when planted in a vegetable garden, as they deter carrot root fly. The foliage, roots and flowers have an onion aroma when disturbed. We think they are a herb garden essential!
Aftercare: Harvest regularly to promote fresh growth. Divide clumps every 3 years to reinvigorate. Water well during dry spells to ensure a lush crop of leaves as Chives don't like to dry out.
