This clump-forming perennial has attractive dark green, willowy foliage on unusual blackish stems and star-shaped, pale blue flowers which are produced from late spring to midsummer. The leaves turn bright yellow in autumn fading to orange then brown which provides late season interest and contrast in the autumn border. Amsonia grows best in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade and is reasonably drought-tolerant. This plant looks fabulous in a mixed herbaceous border and prairie style planting schemes with ornamental grasses.
