Carpinus betulus

Description:
Hornbeam is a favourite for us at Bestall and Co. Its a European native tree favouring open sites such as grassland, meadows or clearings and is a tough plant which enjoys clay soil and can withstand exposed sites. Whether planted as a specimen tree, hedge or spectacular topiary it looks amazing in a garden setting too.  When left alone it grows into a large, broadleaved tree with a naturally globular crown and densely packed green foliage. Catkins open in spring followed by feathered seeds which are a good food source for birds. It is a versatile tree which can be grown and trained to form pleached trees, single stem specimens, topiary shapes and hedging from 1m to 1.8m high.  Despite it's deciduous nature, when maintained as a hedge or topiary the foliage is retained over winter as dry, coppery brown leaves which drop when new buds form in spring. This makes it a valuable garden plant for winter interest, retaining that structure in the garden. We love the naturally formal habit of Hornbeam which looks especially good when it is contrasted with loose ornamental grasses or blousy herbaceous planting.
Carpinus 'Fastigiata' is a form of Hornbeam which has an upright, columnar habit and is quite striking when planted in a row or to mark an entrance. Great for areas where space is limited too.
