Choisya shrubs are also called Mexican Orange Blossom because their flowers have a very similar shape and beautiful perfume to the Orange tree, which is not at all citrusy but rather a bubble-gummy vanilla - quite delicious! Their leaves also emit a spicy fragrance when crushed. If planted in it's preferred spot of full sun, masses of fragrant white flowers appear in a profusion during late spring and again in summer when there has been a hot summer. They are reasonably hardy shrubs, but can loose foliage in very cold winters. Best planted in a sheltered spot out of harsh winds, in full sun for maximum protection. Choisya will also tolerate semi shade but the flowering will be impacted however the attractive textured evergreen foliage is reason alone to grow this shrub. Dark glossy green which forms an attractive mound shape for year round interest.
Choisya x dewitteana 'Aztec Pearl' is a compact variety with more slender leaflets making it an interesting foliage plant in a slightly shaded scheme such as under trees with a light canopies planted with ferns and hostas. There are many cultivars to choose from but we prefer the few with dark green foliage such as C. ternata and C.'White Dazzler'.
