Fagus sylvatica 'Purpurea'
Description:
More commonly known as Copper Beech, this tree has dramatic deep purple foliage that turns vibrant tones of yellow and bronze in autumn. It is a versatile plant, fantastic for hedging and topiary as it has marcescent leaves, which means the crispy bronze foliage remains on the plant well into the winter before falling when new growth starts to develop in spring. It provides valuable structure and screening which we call 'ever present' rather than evergreen. When grown as a tree it produces tassel like catkins in spring which develop into beech masts in autumn, a food source much loved by wildlife. Beech will grow in all soils as long as the ground is well drained.
