Quercus ilex

Description:
This large evergreen tree is native to the Mediterranean.  It can survive in long periods of dry weather and so is well suited to the changing UK climate. Also known as Holly Oak, the glossy dark green foliage is evergreen with slightly serrated edges which have a silvery underside. Young leaves appear a whitish green colour and yellow catkins are produced in spring which are a good source of pollen for insects. If left to grow to a large tree it can reach 25 meters tall however it responds really well to clipping and can be maintained as pleached trees, multi-stem forms, topiary shapes and hedging.  A great choice for increased evergreen privacy in a sunny garden with free draining soil or as an evergreen multistem for a large planter.
