Sambucus nigra

Description:
This ornamental shrub has sultry, dark purple, lacey foliage which can appear black in certain lights. Stained pinkish white flowers develop abundantly in summer, attracting many pollinating insects to the garden. Fruit in the form of black berries is not produced as abundantly as on its wild cousin the native Elder, but does appear in autumn. A great choice if a moody look or high contrast is desired within the garden. The purple leaves act as a great foil showing off brightly coloured herbaceous plants and green foliage to their best advantage.
