Supply and Installation of Brick Soldier Course with Metal Edge Restraints

Scope of Works

Provide all labour, materials, plant, and fixings necessary to supply and install a brick soldier course to the top of the wall, complete with metal edge restraints to ensure durability, alignment, and weather protection.

Materials

Bricks

Bricks to be free from cracks, chips, or damage.

Mortar

Mix: 1 part cement : 5 parts sharp sand (with plasticiser additive).

Mortar colour to match existing wall finish.

All mortar to be well-compacted into joints, with neatly struck flush or weathered finish as specified.

Metal Edge Restraints (Brick Restraint Angles / Cappings)

Galvanised mild steel or stainless-steel restraint angles/edge restraint system, thickness minimum 3mm.

Fixings: Stainless steel screws/anchors as per manufacturer’s recommendation.

Finish: Hot-dip galvanised or powder-coated for corrosion protection (colour to be agreed).

Workmanship

Brick soldier course to be laid vertically on edge, set out evenly with consistent spacing and plumb alignment.

Bricks to be bedded on full mortar joints, minimum 10mm, with perp joints fully filled.

Soldier course to be mechanically restrained using continuous metal edge restraint fixed securely to structural wall substrate.

Expansion joints to be provided as necessary, in accordance with relevant standards (BS 5628 or current codes).

All surplus mortar and debris to be cleaned from brick faces immediately and not allowed to stain.

Tolerances & Finish

Course to be true to line and level, within ±5mm across the entire length.

Vertical alignment of bricks within ±3mm.

Finished appearance to be neat, uniform, and consistent with the rest of the wall.

BS EN 771 (Specification for Clay Masonry Units)

BS EN 998 (Specification for Mortar for Masonry)

BS 5628 (Code of Practice for Masonry) or superseding standards

Manufacturer’s installation recommendations for metal edge restraints

Completion

All works to be inspected and approved prior to practical completion.

Any defective or damaged bricks or edge restraints to be replaced at contractor’s expense.

Finished work to be watertight, structurally sound, and visually consistent.
