Resin bound gravel is a wearing course – a self-contained layer where aggregates are mixed together with a resin to form a smooth surface that has the appearance of gravel without any loose aggregates.
The resin-bound layer itself is 18-20mm in thickness, and requires some form of edging in place to retain the sides.
Once resin bound gravel is levelled and compacted over an existing surface, it creates a decorative surface that is exceptionally hardwearing.
Laying information
For average domestic vehicle use, a minimum of 180mm of compacted MOT type 1 or 2 would be used on a consolidated sub-base, followed by an 80mm layer of 14mm open textured tarmac, providing a suitable base for a 18-20mm resin bound wearing course.
Aftercare requirements
Generally, this requires minimum maintenance such as removing sand, soil and leaves etc. (which can be done using a brush or leaf blower) and washed down with a hosepipe.
Should staining occur from leaf tanning and general dirt etc. a pressure washer on a fan spray setting could be considered providing it is under a maximum pressure of 150bar and is a minimum of 200mm away from the resin surface.
Additional useful information
When installed correctly, resin bound gravel can avoid water collecting on the surface due to its permeable nature. In icy conditions, rock salt can be used but ensure the salt is removed once the adverse weather has subsided.
