BBC Radio Derby Garden at the Chatsworth Flower Show 2019
Designed by Haydn Vernon & implemented by Bestall & Co in association with PMM Landscapes
Winner of the BBC Radio Derby ‘Amateur garden design competition 2019’, Haydn was mentored by award winning garden designer Lee Bestall to develop his design in preparation for the garden to be built at the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show in June. Lee mentored Haydn throughout the design development process and into the construction phase of the garden.
Noted for its interesting brewing history, Burton upon Trent is the location where the BBC Radio Derby show garden at the Chatsworth Flower Show 2019 has taken its inspiration.
Amateur garden designer and retired architect Haydn Vernon includes many original artefacts within the garden which originated from the brewing industry, including old barrels which make up a seating area, a beautiful old wooden wheel barrow and in contrast a brand new willow cooper. A cooper is the name given to a person who makes wooden barrels, and this creation by willow weaver Leilah Vyner of Dragon Willow has been created from local willow and oiled to preserve its lifespan.
Key elements of the garden include the canal style water feature complete with a refurbished piece of bottle filling equipment, relaxed naturalistic planting and Silver Birch tree, representing the Trent wash lands, shade sail representing the shipping industry as many of its beers were shipped over the north sea and an antique hay rack filled with bedding plants, a nod to the traditional pub basket!
“Hadyn is not aiming to recreate a scene from a previous time, more so to take inspiration from an area of the country rich in history, and produce a domestic garden, influenced by the brewing industry. Its a fun garden which celebrates beer, and after creating a brewery garden at Chelsea a few years ago for Welcome to Yorkshire, I’m pretty confident that the public will love it” Lee Bestall
