Installation

Installers to supply and construct the retaining wall as per the drawing for walls under 1.2m high (walls exceeding 1.2m in height must be specified by a structural engineer).

Consolidated sub-base with concrete footings at least 100mm wider than the width of the wall at both sides – footings to be RC 35/45 concrete with 2 layers of re-bar mesh added to provide extra strong foundations.

Base of wall (below ground level and 150mm above ground level) to be built using engineering bricks to match the house.

Wall to be constructed with a double skin of dense concrete 215x100mm blocks laid on edge, tied in with double triangle wall ties on every other course (placed every 700mm across the wall horizontally).  Cavity to be back filled with concrete.

Rear of block wall to be coated in a damp proof paint to protect against damp (such as IKO synthapufe).

400mm wide x 40mm thick sawn sandstone coping can be added – allowing a 25mm overhang (installed prior to render).

Drainage – Install 10mm pea gravel behind retaining wall to assist drainage to weep holes through 100mm perforated drainage pipe.  Drainage weep holes to be provided at 1200mm centres using a 25mm diameter black pipe finished flush with the final coat of render (see diagram).

Wall to be rendered (priming the face of the block-work wall with a primer such as Ecorend G10 Multi-Surface Primer, depending on the surface, before a render such as 20mm thick Ecorend MR1 Monocouche One Coat Render is applied following the manufacturer’s instructions, technical and safety data sheets available on these links).

Additional information

Read the manufacturer’s advice and technical and safety data sheets before use (which includes information on the PPE required etc.) available on the following links –

Ecorend MR1 Render System Application Guide from the manufacturer

Do not apply the MR1 render if the following weather conditions are likely to arise with 24 hour after applying:

  • If frost is forecast
  • In wet conditions and when relative humidity is above 85%
  • In temperatures below +5ºC or above +25ºC
  • If the elevation is in direct sunlight or if the substrate is hot (30ºC or above) or below +5ºC
