A letter from the garden (and from me)

 

Spring has a way of telling the truth.

It doesn’t shout. It doesn’t hide behind structure or hard landscaping. It just gets on with it… and shows you what’s working, and what isn’t. There’s a moment most years where I find myself standing still in a garden, usually with a coffee going cold somewhere nearby, thinking:

“This is it. This is what it was all for.”

Not the big reveal, the finished photos… Not even the build itself. It’s that point where everything has settled. The bones of the garden are doing their job. The planting has started to soften and find its place. And the space feels like it properly belongs to the people living in it. That’s always been the aim for me; not perfection or trends, just creating places that genuinely improve how people think, feel and live.

 

Over the last year, I’ve been reflecting quite a bit on that… and where we actually make the biggest difference. Because if I’m honest, it’s not always where people expect. Yes, we design and build full gardens. And we love doing it. But more often than not, what people really need isn’t more design. It’s better direction, a bit of clarity, someone to say, “do this, don’t do that, spend here, don’t waste your money there.”

That thinking has started to shape how we work as a business. Instead of everything leading towards one big, all-or-nothing service, we’ve built out a few different ways of working with us, depending on what you actually need at that moment. For some, that’s still a full design and build. For others, it’s planting. Or help bringing a space together that’s nearly there but not quite landing.

 

And for quite a few people recently, it’s simply been a conversation. Walking their garden with them and helping them see it differently.

“Good gardens don’t come from more choices. They come from better ones.”

 

That’s where things like The Planting Team have come from. And the Border Refresh service. And even the tour I’m on at the moment. They weren’t big strategic moves. They were answers to the same question coming up again and again:

“Can you just help me get this right?”

So that’s what we’ve focused on. Making things simpler. More considered. More useful. Over the next few articles, I’ll share a bit more about what we’ve been building, what’s new, and a few things you might want to think about as you look at your own garden this season.

If nothing else, hopefully it gives you a slightly different way of seeing it.
